Cultural Competence and Communication in the NHS

Course Overview

This is the seventh module in the IMG to NHS series.  This module explores cultural competence in modern NHS practice, including race, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, religion, sexuality, gender identity, health beliefs, unconscious bias, health inequalities, and inclusive communication. Learners will examine how culture influences patient expectations, decision-making, consent, treatment adherence, and experiences of healthcare.  Designed to help International Medical Graduates develop the cultural awareness, communication skills, and inclusive practice required to deliver safe, respectful, and patient-centred care within the NHS. The NHS serves one of the most diverse populations in the world. Healthcare professionals work with patients and colleagues from a wide range of cultural, religious, ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic, and personal backgrounds. Understanding these differences is essential for building trust, reducing health inequalities, improving communication, and delivering equitable care. The module also provides practical strategies for communicating effectively with diverse patient groups, working with interpreters, adapting communication styles, recognising bias, and creating inclusive healthcare environments that respect individual needs and preferences. Designed specifically for IMGs, this course supports smoother integration into NHS workplaces while helping doctors build stronger therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and colleagues from all backgrounds.
